•Ultrasound assessment of infant feeding (Brisbane, Qld only)

•It is difficult to see what is happening in the mouth when infants are feeding.  Whilst it is possible to provide babies with a bottle where a radiopaque substance has been added to the milk so that the images are visible on x-ray, there are a number of reasons why this may not be suitable.  Whilst sometimes unavoidable, efforts should be made to minimise the need for x-ray of infants.  Ultrasound is a safe alternative.  Its use in the assessment of infant feeding is new.  Ultrasound provides an advantage to breastfed infants, as it is possible to conduct the procedure whilst the infant is breastfeeding.  Until now, breastfed infants would have been required to take a bottle for the x-ray procedure, creating an artificial feeding environment.
